MONEY - STELA - MGK

February 17, 2023

1. HOW DID THIS CREW COME ABOUT? WHAT YEAR DID IT START ?
(MONEY) - I wanted to start an all female crew. I  wasn’t sure on how I was going to make it happen. In 2016 I came up with the name Mad Girls. In 2016 It was only me, so I’d get up mad girl money. 2017 I got stela and batz in and it was a domino affect after that.
2. WHAT IS THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE CREW AND DOES IT DIFFER FROM MEMBER TO MEMBER?
(MONEY) - The main objective is staying active in the streets by Piecing but most definitely bombing. We all bring different aspects to the crew that makes us who we are.
(STELA) - We really try to do all aspects of graffiti; from piecing to bombing, to painting trains, catching tags, painting rollers, painting characters and elaborate productions ect. My personal objective is to grow my skill and paint as many cities as possible.
3. WHAT ARE THE MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN AN ALL GIRL CREW VERSUS A REGULAR CREW?
(MONEY) - To me there shouldn’t be anything different. I know MadGirlsKrew is doing what all these other crews are doing. I wanted our crew to be no different at all. We’re bombers and we stay active.
(STELA) - I’ve never been in a male crew so I don’t fully know. One difference I notice though is that everyone in our crew personally knows each other and we are all close friends. Other than that we function the same as any other crew would.
4. DOES ANYONE HAVE A GOOD CHASE STORY?
(MONEY) - There’s a few but the last one was pretty funny and dope. MGK went to Kentucky for the 2buck event (RIP). There was at least 20 writers on the high way getting up. Next thing you see are the cop lights and everyone running I felt like I was in stampede. You see all of us climbing the fence like some zombies lol. We actually have that on a go pro. Man running through Kentucky not knowing where to hide because you’re from cali lol good times!
5. WHAT KIND OF GRAFFITI OR ART IN GENERAL INSPIRES YOU TO BE A GRAFFITI WRITER?
(MONEY) - What inspires me is the writers that are active in bombing. The more I see anyone up it gets me going gets me back on the street. Sometimes the newbies Im the game get us going.
(STELA) - Old school funk letters, New York subway graffiti and Bay Area wild style from the 90s/early 2000s.
6. WHAT ARE THE FAVORITE TOOLS YOU LIKE TO USE FOR YOUR CRAFT AND WHY?
(MONEY) - Rustos and Boston caps
(STELA) - I think my favorite cap is the Lego cap. I never saw these when I was growing up but now I always have them on hand. I feel like it’s a really good middle ground between skinny and fat and depending on how you spray the can you can range between pretty skinny to decently thick strokes with just the one cap.
7. DO YOU HAVE ANY BUCKET LIST SPOTS YOU WANT TO PAINT?
(MONEY) - Anything out of country.
(STELA) - Probably Chicago and Philly because I have never been there before.
8. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE 2023 GOALS FOR THE CREW AND FOR THE INDIVIDUAL ARTIST?
(MONEY) - Our goal is to support ourselves to stay active and make money off our craft.
(STELA) - Money and I talked about making more art and attending more art shows. We want to use art to fund the crews travels because that’s one thing we all love to do. We also all really like to make art and it’s just another hobby/skill we enjoy pursuing. My personal goal is to improve my piecing letters, I don’t feel satisfied being good-I want to be insanely fucking good.
9. WHAT WOULD YOUR DREAM ROAD TRIP - SPRAY-CATION LOOK LIKE?
(MONEY) - The whole crew together in a van thrasher style.
(STELA) - Hard to say because we have already had so many dope ones, our trip to Guadalajara was definitely a dream and i’de love to go again sometime. What I really want to do is go to NOLA with the girls. Just bombing and eating crawfish non fucking stop lol
10. HOW DO YOU HANDLE BEEF IN THE GRAFF GAME?
(MONEY) - We handle beef by pulling up and running a fade. We’ll dis back but rather pull up to handle it.
(STELA) - Physical fight, if you’re a man I’m using a weapon.
11. HAVE YOU EVER DISSED AN EX BOYFRIEND ON THE WALL ... OR GIRLFRIEND..
(MONEY) - Nope but definitely dissed a few females.
(STELA) - Not that I recall, I’ve never had graffiti beef with a ex partner.
12. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF STREET ART ?
(MONEY) - It’s whatever I guess cool to see the city’s look dope with cool murals.
(STELA) - Fuck that shit.
13. DID THE INTERNET KILL GRAFFITI OR BRING MORE LIFE TO IT?
(MONEY) - Not sure I just know it has a lot of internet gangsters or internet tough guys/girls.
(STELA) - I mean it didn’t kill it, but it definitely took some magic out of it. Graffiti and writers used to be insanely mysterious- graffiti was really personal because we only knew what we actually saw in person. So how we felt about writers was more truly based on their art and how we reacted to it, now your ideas of a person are influenced by what you know about them on the internet. It didn’t use to be that you knew what your favorite writer most recently painted or ate for lunch or what political opinions they had- you just had your honest reaction to their work you saw in real time.
14. BESIDES GRAFFITI WHAT OTHER HOBBIES INTEREST YOU ?
(MONEY) - Painting on canvases, digital work.
(STELA) - Cooking. Actually almost all of us love to cook and we like to have dinner parties pot luck style with each other. Our cooking page is @madgirlskitchen
15. WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO WHILE DOING ART- IF ANY
(MONEY) - Depends art at home I’ll slap some oldies.
(STELA) - Music is mandatory af, I listen to a wide variety while painting and really depends on who I’m with and what we share in common interest. I’m constantly listening to 80s goth music but graffiti is hip hop so we stay slapping old school bay shit like Too $hort.
16. WHAT CITY HAS THE BEST GRAFF SCENE IN YOUR OPINION?
(MONEY) - Oakland,New York, LA from what I’ve seen I haven’t been to all the major cities
(STELA) - I would probably say Oakland because it’s so unique. It’s truly fucking lawless and you have a good chance of finding a runner spot which is really the dream when bombing different cities.
17. HOW LONG DO YOU THINK YOU CAN BE AN ACTIVE GRAFFITI WRITER FOR?
(MONEY) - As long as I can. Lifers for sure
(STELA) - I have og's who have been painting actively for over 20 years, a lot of people fall off but some of us paint graffiti for life for real.
18. IS THERE ANY RULES IN THE GRAFF GAME IN YOUR OPINION?
(MONEY) - There’s a lot of unwritten rules do people follow, then not always lol. Definitely don’t go over people that have passed away. That’s weird
(STELA) - Kinda. I think a good rule is if you are less skilled than someone and have been painting for a lesser amount of time than them, don’t go over them. When you start out you’re super thirsty to get spots and want to take other peoples shit to get shine. But honestly, even if you think you can burn someone, just find a different free spot. There is always another better spot - you just need to find it, there’s really no need to go over people especially if you’re in your first 5 years of graffiti.
19. WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SELLING OUT FOR ANY TYPE OF ARTIST?
(MONEY) - You can do whatever just don’t forget where u started.
(STELA) - I guess creating work that goes against your morals or hurts someone to make money.
20. HOW MANY PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD CAN YOU TRUST?
(MONEY) - No one
(STELA) - NO ANSWER...
21. WHAT IS THE MAIN REASON WHY YOU DO GRAFFITI?
(MONEY) - I love graffiti keeps me sane. I found friends that have turned to family. Doing graffiti isn’t all peaches n cream but I’ve gotten alot of cool stuff from it.
(STELA) - The main reason is I truly love the craft, I love letters and I love painting on walls. My crew keeps me in the game and I don’t think we will ever stop.
22. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FILM ABOUT GRAFFITI, SCRIPTED OR DOCUMENTARY?
(MONEY) - Style wars lol
(STELA) - Piece by piece, which documents graffiti history in San Francisco/ Bay Area.
(MONEY) - Nah I really like the one CBS recently put out. Must watch.
23. WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON AI ART ? DRONE GRAFFITI ? AND THE FUTURE OF THAT MOVEMENT IN REGARDS TO ART?
(MONEY) - It’s whack maybe fun to play around with but don’t expect respect lol
24. WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE 1 YEAR FROM TODAY?
(MONEY) - Back traveling and painting new cities.
(STELA) - I would like to be wealthy, which most likely will not result from graffiti lol. Graffiti wise I would like to be at a place where no matter what, I know I’m going to paint a successful piece.
25. SHOTS OUT TO ANYONE THAT INSPIRES YOU IN LIFE OR THE GRAFF GAME...
(MONEY) - bunch of og's in Lords crew MTA crew TDK But most definitely the girls in my crew inspire me alot I’ve seen how far we’ve come and what we’ve been through.
Thank you
MONEY MGK
(STELA) - Shout out to the whole MGK crew for pushing me to stay active and keeping graffiti fun!! Shoutout to Bukue and Dare for inspiring me and always being down to give me advice on my letters.
