KATER

October 25, 2023

Kater has a black book collection that could rival a library and he makes some dope timelapse reels of his pieces as they are in process. In it they show how he creates his layers. He grew up in a neighborhood with a lot of old writers so letters became a main focal point in his pieces although he still really loves doing characters for him letters are where it's at. We asked him a few questions and were lucky to get an interview with him:

1.  Was there art in your life before graffiti?

◼️Early on there were older writers in my neighborhood that I saw around me. Mostly self-taught but I also had crew mates that had a great influence overall.

2. What got you into letters in graffiti?

◼️Overall letters are what I grew up seeing mainly on trains. I was interested in trying to understand how letters form together and make a piece. There were also characters, but I loved letters!

3. On your bad days how do you stay motivated?

◼️When I’m not feeling motivated, I usually flip through my old sketchbooks and photos of paintings that I have done in the past. I usually look at ways I can improve and upgrade the letters that I have previously painted.

5.  Are there any tools or art supplies you wish you knew about or had when you first started?

◼️Tools that I would have loved to have were some sketchbooks and markers. Some of my favorite markers and brands currently are Posca, Copics, Stylefile, Montana, Molotow outliners, Spectrum Noir, micron, and Steadliners. I have used them all for years.

6. Is there a story behind your name?

◼️Not really, I just made a name where I used the letters to balance them self out. The letters are similar like K and R the T balances it out in the middle.
